Slow Cooker Apple “Crisp” September 30, 2012

With the cooler temps of fall, I have been very inspired with pumpkin lately  as well as using my slow cooker, but I changed up pace with apples this time around. There’s nothing better than the sweet and tangy taste of apples mixed with cinnamon and a little bit of crunch from slivered almonds, warmed in the slow cooker for a few hours to let the flavors blend!

Ingredients:

  • 4 apples -variety of your choice. I used gala for this recipe
  • 1/4 cup almond flour
  • 1/8 cup shredded coconut
  • 1/4 cup  slivered almonds
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon, or add as much to your liking
  • 2 tbsp clarified butter
  • honey – for drizzling

Directions:

Peel, core, and chop apples into cubes. Place in bottom of slow cooker and sprinkle with cinnamon. Mix the almond flour, slivered almonds, coconut, and 2 tbsp cinnamon together until mixed well. Add butter to mixture and blend together until it becomes crumbly. Top the apples with the cinnamon mixture and slow cook for 2-3 hours. Scoop out apples and the crumble topping and place on a plate. Drizzle with honey if desired.

  2. This was delicious!! I didnt even need the honey and it was perfect. I topped it with paleo pumpkin ice cream and it was heavenly!

  3. could you use coconut oil instead of clarified butter?

Is there another kind of flour you can sub out with? I have almond flour or almonds on hand!! This looks SO good!

You can really use any flour, but I try to keep it gluten free for my followers. I bet hazelnut flour would be pretty tasty. Ground flax seed would give it more of a woody flavor as well. I think coconut flour would be okay, not sure how it would turn out with all the moisture though! Let me know if you try something else and it is yummy!

  5. […] 3. Slow Cooker Apple Crisp Slow cookers are great because they allow you to toss everything in and let it cook itself. The end result here is that you end up with a delicious apple crisp without having to babysit it or wonder if it’s going to come out alright. The ingredients list is very basic, and includes the apples of course, and almonds, coconut, cinnamon, honey, and butter, so it’s easy enough to see that this is a Paleo dessert all the way. The more you cook Paleo foods the more you’ll become familiar with what is allowed and what isn’t, and how to substitute Paleo friendly items for unhealthy ones. […]

I made this recipe last night and it didn’t turn out quite right. It seemed like my crockpot got too hot. What setting do you use? I also thought 3 Tablespoons of cinnamon seemed like way too much….was it supposed to be 3 teaspoons? The flavor was overwhelming and the texture a little gritty..

First paleo non-sugar dessert I’ve really enjoyed. I doubled the crumb mixture, adding 1 tablespoon of finely chopped dates, added a pinch of sea salt, (as my organic butter is unsalted), doubled the shredded unsweetened coconut and doubled the butter, also added 1/4 cup quinoa flour. I used four honeycrisp apples. Topped the crisp with 2% Fage Greek yogurt. The crumb texture was sandy and delicious. No honey or other sweetener needed at all! Thank you!!!

I just tried this tonight and added cranberries to it. No need for the honey as it was great just the way it was. So easy to make… Thank you
